Serrated Polyposis Syndrome (SPS)

Serrated Polyposis Syndrome (SPS)

Serrated polyps are a sub-type of pre-cancerous polyps that are the precursors to around 30% of all colon cancers. Serrated polyps are challenging for doctors to identify at colonoscopy, and their detection and removal requires the doctor performing colonoscopy to possess a very high level of expertise and skill.

Serrated polyposis syndrome is an uncommon but increasingly recognized condition in which individuals develop large numbers of serrated-type polyps in the colon over their lifetime, significantly increasing their lifetime risk of developing colon cancer. It is a syndrome that occurs in people with certain genetic mutations, however the exact genes involved have not yet been identified. Management is directed at removal of all serrated polyps through regular, high-quality colonoscopy. For more information, click here.
